The gig economy – the debate goes on
employment contract

The gig economy debate rumbles on – with the employment tribunal appeal ruling on the Uber case due Friday it might seem that we are maybe one step closer to a resolution, but in fact that seems unlikely as both sides have said they’ll appeal to the supreme court if they lose….

The similar case of a worker’s employment status at Pimlico plumbers is also due to be heard at Supreme Court.

So it seems we really are no closer to a conclusive decision on these cases which could influence how we all define whether or not an individual is self-employed, a worker or an employee.

In the meantime we carry on advising clients based on current guidelines covered in both employment law and by the HMRC – as we wait for these rulings we perhaps urge a little more pragmatic caution than before!
