A 2014 survey commissioned by Cisco has found that around 3/4 of UK workers take their mobile devices on holiday and check into work whilst “on the beach” and that the majority do not check the security of the wifi network they are using before accessing it.
The study was commissioned from an IT security perspective but we’re more concerned with the fact that so many employees feel the need to be checking work email on holiday.
We believe that needs addressing – are employers expecting their staff to be in contact (despite what the holiday policy might say), do employees feel under pressure to respond to email, or have we all just got to the point where we can’t switch off?
None of which are healthy – rest and leisure time is crucially important to our well being – what do employers need to do to shift the culture to enable staff to regain that time out?
